This was a while ago, but to celebrate a special occassion we decided to revisit one of our old favorits Commis. This award-winning restaurant has been a long time favorite of ours nested in the Piedmont area, even before it gained it’s more recent recognition. Commis offers reasonably priced fine dining in on the east bay, which although not cheap surpasses many of the more expensive options on the other sides of the bay..
Our CDP
A while ago we stopped by CDP on our way to a reservation and took in a few appetizers (the meal before the meal). We were very impressed by the sister restaurant of Commis so decided to book their prefix menu for our next date nigh. Here’s what we thought (spoilers it’s good).
Our Frida
We had the good fortune to go on a trip with the husband’s parents to Pueblo Bonito. We had went quite a few years ago, and had a great meal at Frida, their local award winning fine dinning restaurant. We had a chance to go back and visit as a gracious gift from the husband’s sister and brother in law.
Would it live up to the memories?
Our Kiraku
The parents coming to babysit our son? A long awaited date night? What should we do?!?! Well, eat of course!
We decided to try out a “Japanese tapas” place near Berkeley called Kiraku. Full details of our order and experience below.
Our Iyasare
Recently, the wife’s mother offerted to baby sit and allow us to have a date lunch out on the town. We decided to go to Fourth Street in Berkeley and when doing a little research came upon glowing reviews for Iyasare.
Would it live up to the hype?

Our Tiger Curry
In the mood for Japanese curry and near Causeway Bay in Hong Kong? Give Tiger Curry a try!
Continuing on our foods through Hong Kong, we stopped by Tiger Curry. A small Japanese style curry cafe. It was small with probably only a dozen or so seats, and didn’t have much of a wait, but hopefully had some good curry!
Dyson Place Dim Sum (Forgot name)
On our way to Sogo in Hong Kong we stopped by Dyson Place that had a modern take on traditional dim sum.
Sorry we couldn’t remember the name but it was one of the only dim sum places in Dyson, and had pastel interiors with pink, green, etc, white tables, and a tea that tasted like Ritz crackers.
Our Hong Kong Cafe – 南龍冰室
For all our visits to Hong Kong, due to all the family gatherings this was the first time the husband was able to eat at a Hong Kong Cafe. We have some local ones in the bay area, Shooting Star being the old standby, but how does it fair against the real deal?
Our Forum
Banquet style Chinese isn’t the husbands favorite. Typically this the about 80% of the meals when visiting family in Hong Kong. Part to do with the jetlagged stomach and part to do with the heaviness of the meal it can tend to be a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, this trip there were at least a few very good Hong Kong banquets, here’s one in Causeway Bay.
Our Via Tokyo
Based of a recommendation from Tiny Urban Kitchen, one of the wife’s favorite food blogs, we took were able to grab a plentiful cone from Via Tokyo.
